SCOR Administration Office Facts

History of Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium

April 2013: The National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced that there would be a new funding opportunity beginning in 2014 for the participation in cancer clinical trials. The funding opportunity will be called NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) and involve community hospitals.

July 2013: Two Community Clinical Oncology Programs (CCOPs), Southeast Cancer Control Consortium, Inc. (SCCC) located in Winston Salem, NC and Upstate Carolina CCOP (Upstate) located in Spartanburg, SC met to discuss the feasibility and desire to merge to form an NCORP. SCCC was a CCOP since 1987 and Upstate was a CCOP since 1983; therefore, they had an impressive history of participation in cancer clinical trials.

November 8, 2013: NCI released the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the NCORP with a submission date of January 8, 2014.

January 8, 2014: The organization name was determined to be SCCC-Upstate for the application with a name change once funded was awarded. SCCC-Upstate submitted an NCORP application composed of 23 communities is a five-state (GA, NC, SC, TN, and VA) area involving up to 90 treatment sites (hospitals, private practices, cancer centers, etc.). James N. Atkins, MD and James D. Bearden, III, MD, FACP are the two Principal Investigators (PIs) for the SCCC-Upstate. Dr. Atkins is a medical oncologist with a private practice, Southeastern Medical Oncology Center, located in Goldsboro, NC. Dr. Bearden is a medical oncologist and current Vice President and Clinical Research and Physician Manager of the  Gibbs Cancer Center and Research Institute located in  Spartanburg, SC. Judith O. Hopkins, MD and Patricia C. Griffin, MD are the two Co-PIs. Dr. Hopkins is a medical oncologist with Novant Health Oncology Specialists in Winston Salem, NC. Dr. Griffin is a radiation oncologist with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in Spartanburg, SC.

July 31, 2014: Notice of award stating SCCC-Upstate is funded as an NCORP Community Site along with 33 other Community Sites across the United States. Funding begins August 1, 2014.

August 19, 2014: SCCC-Upstate changed their official name to Southeast Clinical Oncology Research Consortium, Inc. (SCOR) by the State of North Carolina. The name change was approved by NCI and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) later in early October.

October 23, 2014: First organizational meeting of SCOR was held in Myrtle Beach, SC.
